A solar inverter converts 12V DC battery power to 120V AC, allowing you to run standard AC appliances (TV, microwave, laptop chargers) and potentially your rooftop AC from stored solar energy. For Miami RVs where running the rooftop AC off solar is a goal, inverter selection is critical - a 2,000W inverter is the minimum for a single 13,500 BTU rooftop AC, and many AC units require 2,500-3,000W of inverter capacity to handle the compressor start surge. For loads below the AC (TV, entertainment, USB charging, lighting), a 1,000-2,000W pure sine wave inverter is sufficient. We recommend pure sine wave only - modified sine wave inverters cause buzzing, overheating, and damage in many appliances and are not appropriate for RV use.

For Miami RVs with solar, an inverter-charger (a single unit that both inverts DC to AC and charges the battery from shore power or generator) is often the better choice over a standalone inverter. The Victron Multiplus is our top recommendation - it smoothly transitions between solar/battery output and shore power, provides clean power to all AC loads, charges the battery bank at a configurable rate when shore power is available, and communicates with Victron MPPT controllers for complete system coordination. A Multiplus 12/2000 provides 2,000W continuous AC output and up to 100A of battery charging from shore power - covering most Miami RV use cases including daytime solar operation and nighttime campground hookup.

Inverter installation requires connecting the DC input from the battery bank, the AC output to the distribution panel (through a transfer switch or directly, depending on the installation), and the battery charge input from shore power if an inverter-charger is used. We size the DC wiring for the inverter's peak current draw - a 2,000W inverter at 12V draws 167 amps peak, requiring appropriately sized cables and fusing. All DC connections receive dielectric grease to prevent salt-air corrosion, which is particularly important for the high-current connections that are the most critical in the entire system. We test the complete system under load before completing the installation, verifying both the inverter output and the shore power charging function.

Sizing an inverter to run a rooftop AC in Miami requires understanding the difference between running watts and starting watts. A Dometic 13,500 BTU rooftop AC draws approximately 1,300 watts running, but the compressor start surge can draw 2,500 to 3,500 watts for 1 to 3 seconds at startup. An inverter rated at 2,000 watts continuous may be rated at 4,000 watts peak, which is sufficient for this start surge. Inverters rated at 2,000 watts continuous without a meaningful surge rating may trip on compressor start. We verify both the continuous and surge ratings when sizing inverters for AC loads. For rigs with two rooftop AC units, the surge requirement when both compressors start within seconds of each other can exceed 6,000 watts - requiring a large inverter or a soft-start device that reduces the compressor start current to a manageable level.
2,000W minimum continuous, 3,000W+ recommended for compressor start surge. Most AC manufacturers specify surge starting current in their documentation.
Pure sine wave exactly replicates utility power; modified sine is a stepped approximation. Many appliances (microwaves, medical devices, variable speed motors) malfunction or are damaged on modified sine wave. We install pure sine wave only.
